In Balance is dedicated to providing top-quality, interactive services for a chemically-dependent population with moderate to severe drug problems.

What exactly is intensive outpatient?
Intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) translates to three hours of group therapy three times a week for a total of nine hours a week. At In Balance we have IOP groups for both adults and adolescents, and they run on essentially the same format: twice-a-week talk therapy and once-a-week experiential/recreational therapy.

Where does this take place?
IOP takes place at our Grant Road office in Tucson, AZ. For experiential/recreational therapy, we always meet at the Grant Road office and then travel in a company van out to wherever we might be going for an outdoor experience that day.

What time does it take place?
Adults have a choice between afternoon groups and evening groups on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. The afternoon group meets from 2pm to 5pm and the evening group from 6pm to 9pm. Adolescents meet in the evenings from 6pm to 9pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays and from 10am to 1pm on Saturdays.

How big are the groups?
We limit the total number of participants to 12 people, and the average group size is more like 6-10 people.

What is talk therapy?
Talk therapy is a way we help each other through the problems encountered in recovery from addiction and/or co-occurring disorders such as depression, anorexia, bulimia, or bipolar disease. With guidance from a professional therapist, the group learns how to work through, confront, strategize and resolve conflicts emanating from previous addiction and present recovery. The group also learns a great deal about relapse prevention, the disease of addiction, how to handle emotional and physical triggers and resources available to them to achieve these goals.

What is recreational/experiential therapy?
Recreational/experiential therapy works as a perfect adjunct to talk therapy. Its a time when IOP clients work at an activity together in order to learn more about their addiction from a different perspective. For instance, one activity we do is equine therapy. At a nearby ranch, we show clients how horses can reflect back to them how they feel and behave. We dont ride the horses as much as work around them or do exercises with them. They are very intuitive animals, and we have much to learn from them. Another example of this type of therapy is hiking, art expression, and the like.

How long does IOP last?
Both adults and adolescent programs are 31 sessions long, which includes the initial assessment. Both adult and adolescent programs last 32 sessions of the intensive phase and 1 year of weekly support groups. (For court-mandated adolescents, the program is 28 session. Depending on a number of factors, the program is about 2.5 months.)

What does IOP cost?
The adult and adolescent programs are 5,500 which pays for the entire program.

What happens after IOP ends?
In Balance therapists put together an aftercare treatment plan for you with a series of recommendations that are tailored to your particular circumstances. The aftercare recommendations may include continued 12-step meetings and/or attending In Balances free aftercare program at the Grant Road office. In Balance provides a cost free relapse prevention group for 1 year following graduation from the formal part of the program.
